How is it possible that the Toyota Corolla attains a combined city/highway fuel economy of 52 mpg? A quick look at its engine lineup and drive modes explains why. Our Fort's Toyota of Pekin team has your brief rundown.

Powerhouse Engines

Capable engines keep the Toyota Corolla rolling smoothly:

  • 139-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder
  • 169-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder

Depending on the model, these engines pair with either an automatic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) or an optional six-speed manual transmission. Both work seamlessly with the engines to yield maximum power for the least amount of fuel. Plus, hybrid models have the added perk of a powerful motor that contributes extra throttle when needed.

The Drive Modes

Shift into Hybrid Mode or Sport Mode at the touch of a button. The former activates the Toyota Corolla's hybrid powertrain, allowing you to run on a combination of gas and electric. Meanwhile, Sport Mode adjusts engine and powertrain behavior as well as shift points. The adjusted shift points change predetermined times for automatic shifting, giving you more power and sport responsiveness from behind the wheel.
